Cogito Naranjado Sum (2)
We think,
Therefore are,
And must be--
Here to think,
And be, by asking
How: how is such
Thought defined
As much by what is
As what is not?
Then all thought
That is not me,
I must also be.

Cogito Naranjado Sum (1) appeared 4 years ago on this blog after decades of tinkering. I revisited it this evening with the intention of correcting a fallacy. I don't blame Descartes --beyond "The Substance of Dualism"-- but only myself. If we consider an entity, like a cat curled up asleep in a pie tin --as one of ours often did-- we see some existence is fluid, seeking the shape of its container. So is thought. That's really what this poem is about. Enough said. I welcome opinions, all opinions --and appreciate them without criticizing them.

I do not know what to think of this at this time, friend Geo ... although I write in riddles myself ... this riddle is a bit 2 much 4 me at this time ... anyway ... wishing a very happy Spring season ... wherever you are ... smiles ... Love, cat.
ReplyDeleteI don't know quite what to think of it either, Cat. Maybe that's why I'm still tinkering with it. Happy spring to you too!
Delete... so glad you said that, friend Geo ... about the tinkering/ agonising about our poems, I meant to say ... cuz our poems are our children ... every year and throughout any given year I write and then kill "my children" ... just like that ... no looking back, no records ... just gone ... I know you write seriously precious to me poetry ... and I thank you for that ... Love, cat.
DeleteMost kind, Cat, and thoughtful. I learned early in life that poems can have a life of their own, like children. They can also save lives, save reason and love. Whether we tinker with them or toss them out, they are always with us.
DeleteYou be, Geo.
ReplyDeleteDeal! What the heck, let's both be. Thanks, Arleen!
DeleteMy brain feels like it has just played a challenging game of Twister, Geo.! Pretty cute orange, I will say that :)
ReplyDeleteHave relayed your compliment to live-in photographer and citrus decorator. She thanks you. I have only played twister once in my life --a party in high school-- and enjoyed losing to the hostess. Poetry is a lot like that.
DeleteYou've penned a brain teaser here.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that thought can conform to the shape of its reality or space-ie the cat in the pie tin. But it seems that thought is also effective in probing the unknown and those regions beyond the curtain of our finite knowledge.
But in any regard, that is a pretty orange and until today I have always thought of oranges as simply being happy. So now you've added more complexity to what longs to be a more simple understanding. I will stay with happy including my visit to your garden.
Many thanks, Tom. I wholly agree with the association of oranges with happiness. Also with thought seeking ever-expanding regions of inquiry, understanding and organization --thereby in constant definition of the cosmos.
DeleteI love this :-) And the pretty orange!
ReplyDeleteMay we all be, harmoniously x
Closing sentence of your delightful comment contains two rhyming lines of 4 syllables on either side of its comma. I believe you've invented a new poetic form --effective one too!
