Coreopsideae, Cosmos

Cosmos is what
We understand
Of our universe and
--compose nomenclature
To converse in
Its language of
Nature-- what we live
And do. "Give,
Give," it says.
"For that is all
There is of you."

  1. That's it in a nutshell: "Give, Give . . . for that is all there is of you."

    1. Thanks, Elizabeth. The last line suggested itself from a place not quite conscious --possibly a nutshell.

  3. On a different note...thanks for the cosmos which remind ms so much of my late dad (1885-1971) who nearly always grew these dainty flowers in his garden.

  4. Cosmos always take me back to my childhood. We lived in a fairly run-down house, but my mother always planted flowers by the back door. Always cosmos. And when I was old enough, I helped. My mother was a strong (tiny) lady and those cosmos were one way that she refused to give in to poverty. I like your poem very much and the photo is wonderful. This is the very first time I've ever thought of the second meaning of this flower's name, but now it will be a part of my cosmos memories.

    1. In astronomical parlance, cosmos is the part of the universe we understand. My impression, from your posts and comments, is you understand a great deal. You are one of the reasons I feel I've retired into the company of good minds.

    2. The older I get, the more I know that I don't know much. I like to hang around good minds, though, which is what I'm doing here :)

  6. Give indeed and the cosmos will give back to you what you lost. That's how the universe operates.
