Don't be sorry. That's a qualified approach to the poem. Unlike you, I attended a rural high school and this would explain why some of our larger football players were benched. Gender was not a polite subject then. In fact, it was so cold and we were so bundled up in winter that one could seldom be certain which gender one was dating.
But we must consider, you're 12 years older than I. When you were in high school, girls couldn't legally even have vaginas until age 21. I think it was a time of greater morality and fewer colds. However, by all means read again. Every event is another multiplier.
Remember "bench days" that girls had each month in high school P.E.? Sorry. That's the first thing that came to mind. I'll read again....
